The Greene Turtle in Lewes donated $6,384 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sussex County after selling the first 20 mugs of its mug club at a silent auction earlier this month.

The Greene Turtle, a Maryland-based sports bar and grille franchise, has a mug club at every location that serves as a loyalty program for its customers.

After an initial membership fee, mug club members receive discounts on their drinks. For $ 35, Lewes patrons can purchase a numbered mug that remains theirs for the life of the establishment.

Recently listed on Delmarvanow. com as one of five New Year’s resolutions you’ll actually want to keep, The Greene Turtle mug club’s popularity at other locations led to the charity silent auction.

According to General Manager Jim Affeldt, mug No. 1 auctioned for $ 1,500 to local resident John Kabino, while mug No. 17, the second- highest bid, went for $ 1,200. “ Supporting education for youth in Sussex County is clearly a worthy cause, so we jumped at the chance to be able to support Big Brothers Big Sisters in providing the Computer Explorers program to at- risk children,” Affeldt said. “ We want to be a real community establishment.”

Promoting the importance of bringing technology education to local children are Leanne Silicato Affeldt and Casey Kieffer of Make My Day Event Planning & More LLC; the Realty with Heart Team, headed by Teresa “TC” Cason; and Computer Explorers, run by Jeanne DiAmico and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sussex County. The program that The Greene Turtle has funded will pro-vide supervised educational guidance, technology instruction and a positive and supportive environ-ment for some of the at- risk children in Sussex County. To continue in its efforts to sup-port the community, The Greene Turtle has started a Funds for Friends campaign in which it will pledge 10 percent of all sales from the first Tuesday of every month to a different local charitable cause. Call Jim or Jason at 6446840 to nominate a local charity or nonprofit organization to be the next Funds for Friends recipient.

The Lewes location, which opened in January, sold more than 400 mug memberships within the first week of business. As with any of the restaurants, the mugs hang numerically in order over the bar. The Greene Turtle has been an area tradition since opening in Ocean City, Md., in 1976. Now with 19 total locations in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D. C., the company continues with plans to grow throughout the Mid- Atlantic region. Visit www.thegreeneturtle.com or email info@thegreeneturtle.com for more information and all the latest events.
